Rhetorically-Induced Group Polarization in Small Opinion Networks
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present a novel explanation for the group polarization effect whereby discussion induces shifts toward the extreme. In our theory, rhetorically-induced asymmetry preferentially facilitates majority formation among extreme group members thereby skewing consensus outcomes further in the extreme direction. Additionally, heuristic issue substitution can shift the effective reference point for discussion from the policy reference, yielding differential polarization by policy side. Two mathematical models implementing the theory are introduced: a simple rhetorically-proximate majority model and the accept-shift-constrict model of opinion dynamics on networks which allows for the emergence of enduring majority positions. These models produce shifts toward the extreme without the typical modeling assumption of greater resistance to persuasion among extremists. Our online group discussion experiment manipulated policy side, disagreement level, and network structure. The results, which challenge existing polarization theories, are in qualitative and quantitative accord with our theory and models.

A Continuous Opinion Dynamic Model in Co-evolving Networks-A Novel Group Decision Approach
Opinion polarization is a ubiquitous phenomenon in opinion dynamics. In contrast to the traditional consensus oriented group decision making (GDM) framework, this paper proposes a framework with the co-evolution of both opinions and relationship networks to improve the potential consensus level of a group and help the group reach a stable state. Taking the bound of confidence and the degree of ...
متن کاملA Dynamic Opinion and Network Formation Model∗
Social networks have a profound influence on opinion formation, and at the same time opinion similarity and diversity can draw individuals together or drive them apart. In light of this, we propose a dynamic model in which individuals, belonging to 2 different groups, sequentially update both their opinions and their connections. We show that with probability one this dynamic process converges ...
متن کاملWhat is a leader of opinion formation in bounded confidence models?
Taking a decision in democratic social groups (societies) is based on the opinion of the majority or on the consensus, if it is the case. Personalities and opinions of individuals constituting a social group in different stages of its development are used to be heterogeneous. The difference in opinions is indeed a motive to changes in a social group. So, the study of opinion dynamics is of grea...
متن کاملDynamics of bounded confidence opinion in heterogeneous social networks: concord against partial antagonism
Bounded confidence models of opinion dynamics in social networks have been actively studied in recent years, in particular, opinion formation and extremism propagation along with other aspects of social dynamics. In this work, after an analysis of limitations of the Deffuant-Weisbuch (DW) bounded confidence, relative agreement model, we propose the mixed model that takes into account two psycho...
متن کاملMulti-equilibria Regulation Agent-based Model of Opinion Dynamics in Social Networks
This article investigates the Multiple Equilibria Regulation (MER) model, i.e., an agent-based simulation model, to represent opinion dynamics in social networks. It relies on a small set of microprerequisites (intra-individual balance and confidence bound), leading to emergence of (non)stationary macro-outcomes. These outcomes may refer to consensus, polarization or fragmentation of opinions a...
